40 Days Strong!

40 seems like a significant number. It was used in the bible numerous times. 40 years the Israelites wandered through the wilderness. 40 days Jesus fasted and prayed. According to an article on biblestudy.org (http://www.biblestudy.org/bibleref/meaning-of-numbers-in-bible/40.html)

"Mention[ed] 146 times in Scripture, the number 40 generally symbolizes a period of testing, trial or probation."

Interesting!  i do feel like these past 40 days have been a period of testing.  Temptation lurks at every corner. In fact, just last evening my son called and said we should go out for Pho. I never like to turn down dinner with family, especially my kids, so of course I said yes. Problem was, I wouldn't have been able to make it to the restaurant until 7:30. And I have been trying to cut my eating off at 6:00, 7:00 at the very latest.

Thankfully, he called while I was finishing up with a student and said maybe we should eat at home. He was going to play basketball and was not that hungry. My son has been working on discipline too!

I told him later, that I was glad he cancelled and saved me from myself!

I woke up bright and early and went for my walk. Today is breakfast with my mom day.  My heart is heavy. I was shocked and saddened by the massacre in Charleston, SC. A young white man opened fire on a group of African Americans during a bible study, killing 9.  Senseless. But opens the fresh wounds of racism in our country.

I decided to just walk this morning. I didn't find any music on my radio that moved me. So I scanned until I came to the Catholic station. And they were doing their morning offering. The prayer resonated with me and I would like to share it here:

"

Morning Offering

My God, I offer you my prayers,
works, joys and sufferings of this day
in union with the holy sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world.
I offer them for all the intentions of your Son’s Sacred Heart,
for the salvation of souls, reparation for sin,
and the reunion of Christians.
Amen." (fromhttp://www.loyolapress.com/morning-offering-prayer.htm)

And from my favorite saint:
"The Prayer of St. Francis is one of the best known and best loved prayers in the world today. Attributed traditionally to St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), pictured above, its actual origins are much more recent. Nonethless it beautifully reflects his devotion to God! " (http://www.ourcatholicprayers.com/the-prayer-of-st-francis.html)

The Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.

Blessings and happiness on this Saturday!

Year Three, Day 58: Marilyn Monroe's Measurements

Day 24 of daily hooping. I am determined to shrink these abs, if it is the last thing I do! Perhaps I should have that written on my tombstone: "Here lies Zita". Flat abs at last!! Well I certainly hope to attain my flat abs goal BEFORE I am dead and gone! Today's video was another rush job. But I downloaded some fun tunes to my Kindle last night.  I enjoyed my hoop session more listening to the Punjabi music. It reminded me of the "Maritime Bhangra Dancers".  If you haven't heard of them, you should look them up. They never fail to put a smile on my face! I am not smiling so much looking at this video. My hooping skills have improved a bit, but that menopot has got to go! After my hoop session, I walked 3/4 mile to the bus stop. I was planning on attending the 10:00 a.m. Mass at the Grotto, but it was cutting it close. Plus, I was feeling the need for a Starbucks iced tea.  Today was Iced Passionfruit/Black Tea, no sugar whatsoever.   The ic

Year Two, Day 274: I Like Me. RIP Packy!

Today's fruit of the spirit that I am focusing on is patience.  This I need more of. And coincidentally (or not), I read in my book Challenge: A Daily Meditation Program Based on the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius by Mark Link, S.J. the following: "I asked God to give me happiness, and God said, 'No.' He said that patience is a by-product of tribulation. It isn't granted, it is earned." Well, not to sound smug, but I am certainly earning my patience award!  :) I am having a good day, however I am a bit over caffeinated. I earned (patiently lol) a free latte today at Starbucks.  On a side note, I love being a regular customer. I walked into my regular Starbucks today, and one of the barista's yelled, "Zita!" from across the room. I felt like I was in an episode of "Cheers"! I love being recognized in a friendly manner. I had a venti "Smoked Butterscotch Latte with soy".   I have found the per

Year Four, Day 321: Pandemic Times Day 70, "Stay Home - Stay Safe" Day 57: Part I: I Need a Drink

Hi Friends:  After I posted my blog last night, I read conflicting information about the re-opening of Oregon. Yesterday, when I posted that all of Oregon was reopening, including Portland, but only stand alone retail stores, daycare and day camps for kids, I was referring to this article from the Oregonian:   https://www.oregonlive.com/coronavirus/2020/05/all-of-oregon-including-portland-can-reopen-friday-to-some-extent-questions-answered.html I had read that Governor Brown had extended Oregon's State of Emergency until July 6th. But that is different than her stay at home order. Which is in effect until "further notice". https://www.kgw.com/mobile/article/news/health/coronavirus/oregon-state-of-emergency-versus-stay-home-order-whats-the-difference/283-95a91ace-9580-40ee-a8b6-727c6bec3216 Of course, then there was the judge who said Kate Brown's restrictions were null and void: "A judge in rural Oregon tossed out statewide coronavirus restric
