Year Four, Day 216: Peaceful, Flowing Spirt

I am feeling so much better today than yesterday.

Our grandmas had it right when they told us to rest and drink plenty of fluids when we felt under the weather.

I did just that. And today I feel a tad bit higher than the weather. And that is saying a lot! It is another gorgeous fall day. It is quite chilly, but no wind. The skies are clear and blue. The trees that have hung on to their leaves are displaying them in brilliant color of orange, yellow and red.

I love bright colors. That is probably why I am having so much fun knitting "healing socks".

I gave my daughter a pair yesterday. Bright yellow, black and white in bulky yarn. She cocked one eyebrow as she looked at them. But when she put them on she smiled. "They are very soothing", she said. "It's almost like they are massaging my feet!"

I agree. There is something almost magical about my healing socks. Hence the name. I look forward every day to coming home and putting on my bright, bulky socks.  I did not make them with a tight enough knit to be worn anywhere other than at home.

But they are perfect for cold, winter days, snuggled up with a hot cup of tea or cocoa, watching a movie or reading a book.

Ahhh...comfort!

I am still transitioning into middle ages.  Grandmahood.  And I find that I do not seek adventure as much as I seek comfort.

And ritual.

I used to fight ritual like it was the plague when I was younger. I feared boredom and monotony.

But what I've found, is that routine can be beautiful, freeing and comforting if done with a kind and loving heart. And the intention of having a peaceful, flowing life.

So I got up early this morning. I hooped. I cleaned the kitchen. I made breakfast for the whole family. Then I sat down with my mother at the kitchen table and chatted with her over a cup of coffee.

Healing Socks for my granddaughter and my dad
We've started having breakfast at my place instead of eating out.  Much less stressful now that I have a good morning routine.

I even gave her a pair of healing socks to take home to my father. My daughter gave them a container of salmon chowder. Made with the salmon her husband caught at the coast last week.

My mother texted me later that he loves his socks.
She even sent a picture! :)

My Dad's Healing Socks

Then I cleaned with my granddaughter. She also seems to really enjoy our routine. We had breakfast and cleaned. Then she played while I knitted socks. Then we had "school"
where we colored, wrote "A, B & C", played the piano and sang.

Next was a snack and a little viewing of "Little House on the Prairie".

Her mom and dad came home shortly afterwards.  I finished a load of laundry and headed out to the library, where I sit now. Blogging. I am researching a few hymns for my column in the church newsletter.

Next I plan on grabbing a bite to eat and then working out a bit at the gym.  My reward will be a long soak on the hot tub!

This evening I plan to spend time with my piano while my granddaughter goes to a harvest festival with her parents.

I was invited, but I am not much in a people mood. My piano, my knitting, a book, a cup of tea and a BBC show (Lately it's "Scott & Bailey") sounds like a fine time to me!

I feel peaceful.  My spirit is flowing!

Happy Thursday!  Happy Halloween!

Love,

Zita

P.S. Here is today's hooping video. Day 179!

Year Four, Day 328: Success at Last!! This is What I Do

Hello My Long Lost Friends! Or, perhaps it was I who was lost? And now I think I am beginning to find myself!  Under layers of fat, and self loathing!  How's that for an opening line!  Or perhaps the title of a novel:  Layers of Fat and Self-Loathing! Today I stepped on the scale.  I am weighing myself every morning these days. I was shocked! I told my partner the scale must be broken!  Yesterday I weight 186. Today 185! I have been on a strict intermittent fast for the past 10 weeks. I have officially lost 12 pounds!  And the best news is I think I not only can stick to this way of eating, I am actually beginning to really enjoy it!  And look how far I've come! I've been writing since May 12, 2015.  Over 8 years now!  I know this blog post says Year Four, Day 328, but there have been many pauses in blogging. For instance, when I am not pleased with progress or simply have no words! I was 53 when I first began blogging. I am now 61. I honestly feel better than I did 8 years

Year Four, Day 335: "Crisis Fatigue"

Hello Friends! I have missed you! I have been so utterly exhausted and downright depressed, that I couldn't summon enough energy to even lift my fingers to this computer keyboard to write.  Apparently there is a mental disorder for people going through crises.  Crises such as pandemics, systemic racism, political division, unemployment, police brutality, civil unrest.... It's called "crisis fatigue". When humans are presented with a threat, adrenaline is released to give us quick energy. This is called the "fight or flight syndrome". But when threats are overwhelming, and perceivably continuous, like this year, it overwhelms the system. People can feel numb, depressed, anxious and irritable. Yup. That's me.  I guess I'm quite normal after all! I found an interesting article that describes crisis fatigue, especially in relation to current events.  But it doesn't really address how to take care of ourselves during these unsettling times!

Year Four, Day 247: What Happened in Vegas...

Expectations can be brutal. Especially when reality dashes them against the rocky shores of our souls. How's that for an opening line? I was so excited about my recent trip to Las Vegas.  I haven't travelled anywhere in so long. I do believe I have been bit by the travel bug.  I want the freedom to go places I have never been, see things I have never seen and experience life as a stellar adventure! My kids are young adults with families of their own.  I have my role as Zma, as Teacher Zita. But I am on a quest to find Zita. She's hidden someone deep inside. Covered in layers. Like an onion. I like the onion analogy. Notice the outermost layer of an onion - dry  and papery. As you peel off layers, the inside is juicy and sweet. I have paid my dues of sacrifice, shame and self deprivation.  What I want now is to embrace the life I have remaining. Have you seen the life pie chart? I don't know where I read this, but it stuck with me.  Draw a circle.  And then divide it i
