Year Four, Day 168: TOWANDA!

Today marks 30 days of intermittent fasting. The last week I have really started noticing a difference. It has gotten easier.  Most of this process is mental and emotional.

My eating rituals had a strong hold on me. I dare to say I was an addict.

It has gotten easier, but the struggle is still there. And very real.

The hardest times for me are from about 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. The hunger pangs start and my need to eat to ease my pain assaults me. Having a strict eating window and fasting window has saved my butt many times!

This is my fasting/eating schedule so far for the month of July: (EW = Eating Window;  TF = Total Fast time

7/1  EW: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.  TF: 15 hours
7/2  EW: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.  TF: 16 hours
7/3  EW: 8:30 a.m. to 7p.m.  TF: 13.5 hours
7/4  EW: 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  TF 11. 5 hours
7/5  EW:10 a.m. to 7 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/6  EW:10 a.m. to 7 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/7  EW:7 a.m. to 5 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/8  EW: 9:30 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/9  EW:10:20 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/10 EW:11:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/11 EW:10:20a.m. to 2:20 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/12 EW:10:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/13 EW:8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/14 EW:6:30 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/15 EW:10:40 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/16 EW:6:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/17 EW:10:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. TF 15 hours
7/18 EW:6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. TF 15 hours

This is a huge victory for me! The added bonus is I have more energy, my clothes are fitting better and I have lost weight. Only 8 pounds so far, but I feel like I can stick to this way of life. I am confident I will eventually reach a healthy weight.

The interesting thing is that as the fat melts, I realize how I have insulated my feelings for most of my life by overeating.  Now that I do not have food as a shield, I am feeling a little bit vulnerable and a whole lot empowered.

As my good friend Char and I used to say (From "Fried Green Tomatoes") :

TOWANDA!

On that note, I need to head out and teach.  Teaching, by the way, has given me much peace lately amidst all the negativity in the world.  Focusing on music and the lives of each individual student is infinitely more rewarding then watching politicians scream at each other!

Remind me to tell you of the new book series I am reading by the author Richard Paul Evans. I just finished The Road to Grace. Amazing! Inspirational! I am researching the Amercian Discovery Trail - it's on my bucket list!  But must run now!

Peace,

Zita

p.s. Here is today's hooping video. Day 111. With my successful eating, I am enjoying more energy to workout! I've been continuing with my daily Qi Gong/Hooping plus a workout (albeit short - 20 min) at the gym daily!

TOWANDA!

Year Four, Day 328: Success at Last!! This is What I Do

Hello My Long Lost Friends! Or, perhaps it was I who was lost? And now I think I am beginning to find myself!  Under layers of fat, and self loathing!  How's that for an opening line!  Or perhaps the title of a novel:  Layers of Fat and Self-Loathing! Today I stepped on the scale.  I am weighing myself every morning these days. I was shocked! I told my partner the scale must be broken!  Yesterday I weight 186. Today 185! I have been on a strict intermittent fast for the past 10 weeks. I have officially lost 12 pounds!  And the best news is I think I not only can stick to this way of eating, I am actually beginning to really enjoy it!  And look how far I've come! I've been writing since May 12, 2015.  Over 8 years now!  I know this blog post says Year Four, Day 328, but there have been many pauses in blogging. For instance, when I am not pleased with progress or simply have no words! I was 53 when I first began blogging. I am now 61. I honestly feel better than I did 8 years

Year Four, Day 335: "Crisis Fatigue"

Hello Friends! I have missed you! I have been so utterly exhausted and downright depressed, that I couldn't summon enough energy to even lift my fingers to this computer keyboard to write.  Apparently there is a mental disorder for people going through crises.  Crises such as pandemics, systemic racism, political division, unemployment, police brutality, civil unrest.... It's called "crisis fatigue". When humans are presented with a threat, adrenaline is released to give us quick energy. This is called the "fight or flight syndrome". But when threats are overwhelming, and perceivably continuous, like this year, it overwhelms the system. People can feel numb, depressed, anxious and irritable. Yup. That's me.  I guess I'm quite normal after all! I found an interesting article that describes crisis fatigue, especially in relation to current events.  But it doesn't really address how to take care of ourselves during these unsettling times!

Year Two, Day 313: Most Excited Am I!

I almost started today's blog with my standard, "Most tired am I" And I am. So tired. And ready for spring.  But tonight when I got home, my wonderful housemate told me that I had a package waiting for me on the counter.  So I ran in and found the book I had been waiting for: Open Mind, Open Heart , by Thomas Keating. Most excited am I! I put a bag of popcorn in the microwave, filled my water and was heading downstairs to open my new book - but I had to detour around the cat who had just killed and attempted to eat a spider. Good kitty! :) I ordered this book the day that I was inspired to turn my introversion into a positive. To use it as a stepping stone to a deeper relationship with God. To go up to the next level in my spiritual path. Thomas Keating is known as "The leader within the Catholic world in the task of recovering our Christian contemplative heritage" Ewert H.
