It's 10:32 pm, Thursday, April 9, 2020. It's late. I need to keep this short. The numbers are still going up. As of 10:30 pm this evening, there are 1,607,567 confirmed covid-19 cases globally and 95,8111 deaths. Sadly, I predict that by this time tomorrow, there will be 100,000 deaths from the enemy of humankind: the virus
Today is day 100 - 100 days since China reported the corona virus to the World Health Organization.
How our world has changed in 100 days!
I am continually amazed at how time seems to be flying in isolation.
Not so for my son who is experiencing extreme social isolation - of the prison kind. He still has 9 months to serve. I has a scare today. One of my son's friends posted an article on Facebook from the Portland Mercury:
https://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2020/04/08/28262478/inmate-protest-over-covid-19-response-forces-north-portland-prison-into-lockdown
I was very concerned, worried about a riot in the prison. I left a voice mail for my son. I didn't expect to hear back from him today, because the article said there had been a confrontation between two units of inmates and some guards which put the prison on lockdown.
My son called a few hours later. On his lunch break from work. He said they were not on lockdown and they did get hand soap today, finally. That was one of the complaints. He said the inmates wanted to have "an adult discussion" about concerns about the condition within the prison, especially since the pandemic. They are worried about hygiene, social distancing and being able to get accurate information. The lockdown was misrepresented in the article. The prison has been locked down- no visitors, classes, meetings, or church services - for the past month or so. Plus, their time in "the yard" has been greatly decreased.
Other than that, all is well and they just want this to be over so they can get visits, have AA meetings, do classes and serve their time.
I exhaled for the first time all day.
I guess, in a sense, we are all doing time, aren't we?
In that note, I wish you health and a blessed evening.
Talk to you tomorrow!
Love,
Zita
