Year Two, Day 353: ἄτακτος

Καλό απόγευμα! (Good evening)
My laptop keyboard is still typing in Greek!

Luckily I am smarter than my laptop.  And in the process, hey-I am learning Greek! One word at a time!

A bit tedious, using the online keyboard.

Μuch cutting and pasting am I.

It is ok.  It could be worse!

Plus, I am having a good day.  I am proud of myself for pulling myself up by my boot straps.  Resurrecting the self discipline, am I!

I was hungry this morning. REALLY hungry. Which is a good thing. I am reinstalling my no food after 8 p.m. rule. It is good because, if I am hungry in the morning, that will motivate me to GET OUT OF BED!

And get out of bed I did. I left in time to stop at the little gas station and fill up my coffee mug. I made all my bus transfers with time to spare. So I sat at Safeway, and enjoyed a cup of yogurt and fruit, sipping my coffee.

Speaking of food, this is my food diary for the day. Yup. Reinstalling the food diary too!

9 a.m. Coffee, with 2 T cream and 1 T sugar.
9:40 a.m. 1 cup vanilla yogurt, topped with 3 strawberries, 5 blueberries, and 1 T granola.
11 a.m. 1 cup coffee with 2 T cream and 1 T sugar, 6 rice crackers, 2 small squares of sharp cheddar cheese.
1 p.m. 1 small bowl beef pho. 2 cups hot tea.  1 glass lemonade.
3 p.m. 8 ounces salted peanuts, 8 ounces unsweetened green iced tea.
6 p.m. 1 Tillamook Cheeseburger on a gluten free bun at Burgerville. Ice water.
9 p.m. 1 cup herbal Sleepytime Tea. No sweetener.

Tomorrow I will weigh in!

At church this morning, I almost dropped my Bible, when the pastor told us to turn to 1 Thessalonians 5:14, the first of our study passages for the day. He started to talk about how Paul tells us to be patient towards everyone and encourage the weak, idle and lazy. He said it can be difficult to motivate people without making them dependent on you.  He then mentioned how he likes to motivate people to exercise, but even he sometimes has trouble. He said the hardest part about working out is just getting to the gym!

Seriously felt like he was talking directly to me.  Because going to the gym was on my agenda today. After church, I was heading to Pho Vietnam for a nice pho lunch, then to my eye appointment for new glasses and then to the gym. But secretly, I was worried that I would get tired and lazy after lunch.

Then the pastor mentioned the Greek word " ἄτακτος" from the passage.

The Greek word ataktos literally means “out of line,” “undisciplined,” “not maintaining order.”.

I told you he was talking to me! In Greek even!  ἄτακτος is my Greek word of the day.

Well, needless to say, I made it to lunch, my eye appointment, AND the gym.

I did 30 minutes on the treadmill, and did some weights focusing on back and biceps. Then a bit of stretching.  Just getting there was most of the battle like my pastor said!

Proof! I made it to the gym!

Most determined am I!

I did end up having a cheeseburger for dinner.  I was going to just have fruit and cottage cheese again, but my cell phone was dying, and I knew I could charge it at Burgerville. Plus they had gluten free buns. Plus I had such a good workout, I figured I deserved it.

Do you see how I rationalize?

But overall, I feel good. We shall see what the scale tells me in the morning.

My new, or shall I say refurbished goals are to stop eating at 8 p.m. Eat three solid meals a day, limiting in between meal snacks to fruit, nuts, water and iced tea.  Exercise every day. Continue gluten free and low carb.  Increase veggies.

I can do this!

Χαρούμενη Κυριακή!
(Happy Sunday!)

 Talk to you tomorrow!

My fruit of the spirit today was self control.  And I conquered!

Zita

(By the way, Zeta is the 6th letter of the Greek alphabet.  Just in case you were wondering!)

Year Four, Day 328: Success at Last!! This is What I Do

Hello My Long Lost Friends! Or, perhaps it was I who was lost? And now I think I am beginning to find myself!  Under layers of fat, and self loathing!  How's that for an opening line!  Or perhaps the title of a novel:  Layers of Fat and Self-Loathing! Today I stepped on the scale.  I am weighing myself every morning these days. I was shocked! I told my partner the scale must be broken!  Yesterday I weight 186. Today 185! I have been on a strict intermittent fast for the past 10 weeks. I have officially lost 12 pounds!  And the best news is I think I not only can stick to this way of eating, I am actually beginning to really enjoy it!  And look how far I've come! I've been writing since May 12, 2015.  Over 8 years now!  I know this blog post says Year Four, Day 328, but there have been many pauses in blogging. For instance, when I am not pleased with progress or simply have no words! I was 53 when I first began blogging. I am now 61. I honestly feel better than I did 8 years

Year Four, Day 335: "Crisis Fatigue"

Hello Friends! I have missed you! I have been so utterly exhausted and downright depressed, that I couldn't summon enough energy to even lift my fingers to this computer keyboard to write.  Apparently there is a mental disorder for people going through crises.  Crises such as pandemics, systemic racism, political division, unemployment, police brutality, civil unrest.... It's called "crisis fatigue". When humans are presented with a threat, adrenaline is released to give us quick energy. This is called the "fight or flight syndrome". But when threats are overwhelming, and perceivably continuous, like this year, it overwhelms the system. People can feel numb, depressed, anxious and irritable. Yup. That's me.  I guess I'm quite normal after all! I found an interesting article that describes crisis fatigue, especially in relation to current events.  But it doesn't really address how to take care of ourselves during these unsettling times!

Year Four, Day 247: What Happened in Vegas...

Expectations can be brutal. Especially when reality dashes them against the rocky shores of our souls. How's that for an opening line? I was so excited about my recent trip to Las Vegas.  I haven't travelled anywhere in so long. I do believe I have been bit by the travel bug.  I want the freedom to go places I have never been, see things I have never seen and experience life as a stellar adventure! My kids are young adults with families of their own.  I have my role as Zma, as Teacher Zita. But I am on a quest to find Zita. She's hidden someone deep inside. Covered in layers. Like an onion. I like the onion analogy. Notice the outermost layer of an onion - dry  and papery. As you peel off layers, the inside is juicy and sweet. I have paid my dues of sacrifice, shame and self deprivation.  What I want now is to embrace the life I have remaining. Have you seen the life pie chart? I don't know where I read this, but it stuck with me.  Draw a circle.  And then divide it i
