Year Two, Day 250: Getting My Healthy On! Look at that Lassi!

I continued celebrating my birthday yesterday. Alone.

55 seems like a milestone birthday. I had a lot to think about. And a new piano student to get to in the icy snow!

I did get a little wiser though. I finally put on the snow cleats my daughter gave me.  Now that the snow will be melting soon, I have figured out how to get around safely!  I guess we humans are reactionary creatures.

So next snowstorm I will be prepared!

It was a lovely day yesterday. A little less frigid, but the snow was still on the ground.  I set out with the intention of going to the gym, having my birthday dinner at Sizzler, to my new student's house and then to Fred Meyer to buy mango, lime, coconut milk and cardamom.  I found a lovely recipe for a "Mango Coconut Lassi" in "First for Women" magazine (January 23, 2017.  The article is about healing your gut, eating healthy and losing weight using healthy fat, fiber, water and spices like ginger, cumin, coriander, turmeric and cardamom.  This is right up my alley. I love Indian food and I have been craving fresh fruits and vegetables!

It was slow going. Even with my cleats on.  The first bus did not show. Deja vu! I walked up to SE 82nd and was so hungry, I decided to eat first.

I had a lovely piece of salmon and rice for my entree at Sizzler. I also had a salad from the salad bar. I behaved myself (Mostly. I did have some chocolate pudding for dessert):

Lovely Salmon :)
Healthy Salad. Not shown: chocolate pudding!

After my lovely dinner I was a bit sleepy. I sat and read and sipped water and considered just heading to my student's house. The sky was getting dark and the temperature plummeting.

But no! Some inner strength kicked in and I got up and went to the gym!

I didn't have much time, so I just did some weights for upper body.

But I went!

Then I head to my new student's house.  I was right on time, snow and all!

Then I headed on down to Fred Meyer's. I felt good about all I had accomplished. So I decided to walk. It was only about 8 blocks. And the Hawthorne neighborhood, usually bustling with traffic and pedestrians, was like a ghost town.

I liked it. Quiet, except for the sound of snow crunching underneath my cleated boots.
Hawthorne ghost town.

I got all the ingredients for my mango lassi and headed home.

My healthy breakfast.  Look at that lassi! :)

This morning I continued my healthy eating. I had a small plate of home fries with jalapeno and garlic, 1 piece of bacon and 1 egg scrambled with fresh diced tomatoes, topped with a few pieces of avocado.  And my mango lassy! It was scrumptious!

I am feeling quite motivated to keep up this healthy eating. I may not get to the gym as often with this cold weather and my new work schedule.

I am planning on getting up early (eh hem...we shall see!) and hitting the gym before my new church job. But maybe after the weather gets a big warmer.

So now I will stretch, shower and go out into the snow (with boot cleats) and teach piano! This I can do!

Happy Monday!

Year Four, Day 328: Success at Last!! This is What I Do

Hello My Long Lost Friends! Or, perhaps it was I who was lost? And now I think I am beginning to find myself!  Under layers of fat, and self loathing!  How's that for an opening line!  Or perhaps the title of a novel:  Layers of Fat and Self-Loathing! Today I stepped on the scale.  I am weighing myself every morning these days. I was shocked! I told my partner the scale must be broken!  Yesterday I weight 186. Today 185! I have been on a strict intermittent fast for the past 10 weeks. I have officially lost 12 pounds!  And the best news is I think I not only can stick to this way of eating, I am actually beginning to really enjoy it!  And look how far I've come! I've been writing since May 12, 2015.  Over 8 years now!  I know this blog post says Year Four, Day 328, but there have been many pauses in blogging. For instance, when I am not pleased with progress or simply have no words! I was 53 when I first began blogging. I am now 61. I honestly feel better than I did 8 years

Year Four, Day 335: "Crisis Fatigue"

Hello Friends! I have missed you! I have been so utterly exhausted and downright depressed, that I couldn't summon enough energy to even lift my fingers to this computer keyboard to write.  Apparently there is a mental disorder for people going through crises.  Crises such as pandemics, systemic racism, political division, unemployment, police brutality, civil unrest.... It's called "crisis fatigue". When humans are presented with a threat, adrenaline is released to give us quick energy. This is called the "fight or flight syndrome". But when threats are overwhelming, and perceivably continuous, like this year, it overwhelms the system. People can feel numb, depressed, anxious and irritable. Yup. That's me.  I guess I'm quite normal after all! I found an interesting article that describes crisis fatigue, especially in relation to current events.  But it doesn't really address how to take care of ourselves during these unsettling times!

Year Four, Day 247: What Happened in Vegas...

Expectations can be brutal. Especially when reality dashes them against the rocky shores of our souls. How's that for an opening line? I was so excited about my recent trip to Las Vegas.  I haven't travelled anywhere in so long. I do believe I have been bit by the travel bug.  I want the freedom to go places I have never been, see things I have never seen and experience life as a stellar adventure! My kids are young adults with families of their own.  I have my role as Zma, as Teacher Zita. But I am on a quest to find Zita. She's hidden someone deep inside. Covered in layers. Like an onion. I like the onion analogy. Notice the outermost layer of an onion - dry  and papery. As you peel off layers, the inside is juicy and sweet. I have paid my dues of sacrifice, shame and self deprivation.  What I want now is to embrace the life I have remaining. Have you seen the life pie chart? I don't know where I read this, but it stuck with me.  Draw a circle.  And then divide it i
