Year Two, Day 361, Part 2

My keyboard is typing English again.

I mentioned to my roommate's brother when I got home, that my keyboard was only typing Greek.  He seemed very knowledgeable about computers. So I just kind of slipped that into conversation.  He looked at me oddly and said that should be easy to fix. I told him I had tried everything. And that my laptop was old. Very old. I'm thinking over 10 years old. Plus, Windows crashed about 5 years ago. And one of my teenage piano students loaded Ubuntu on it.

The brother said he could fix it in five minutes. I asked him if I went down to me room and brought it up, would he look at it?

"Of course", he said.

I was skeptical. And I had to move fast. You see, my computer has to be plugged in constantly, or it loses its charge.

But, it was worth a try! So I ran down the stairs. unplugged it, and ran up the stairs.

And virtually five minutes later, here I am. Typing in English!

Ubuntu calls the "Windows" key the "Super" key. In settings, it says to hit the super key and space bar simultaneously to switch languages. I had seen that instruction last week when I had "tried everything", but I had no idea what a super key was.

Guess I didn't try every everything.

It is nice to type freely again.  But I am still studying Greek!

But the real news is - the reason I had to get online and give you an update is - an amazing thing happened on the way home tonight!

I was walking the 3/4 mile home from the bus stop. I was feeling happy and peaceful. First of all, it was still light at after 8:45 p.m.  Secondly, I feel so proud of myself for eating well today. Third, I think I already feel energized from reducing sugar and salt!

Anyway...there I was, walking along, when a dark SUV pulled over. At first I thought it was my roommate. But there was a man driving. A man still in uniform. Bus driver uniform.

It was "D"!

"Hi, Zita", he said. "Would you like a ride home"?

Boy, did I! Especially from handsome D!

I was only about 1/4 mile from home at that point, but I hopped in.

"Well, this is service"!, I said. I couldn't stop smiling.

He said he lived nearby and sometimes he saw me walking. Now that we knew each other better, he thought it would be a good time to offer me a lift.

Before I knew it, we were in front of the church. I told him he could drop me off there, because I lived in the house behind the church. It was easier to just pull into the parking lot.

I showed him the door to my church office.

"That's my office door", I said.

"Nice door", he said.

We had just parked. I realized I was just sitting there looking at him.

Ok. Ogling.

I was ogling him.

Probably with googly eyes.

I got a hold of myself and thanked him for the ride.

He was smiling.  Kind of with googly eyes?

Ok...not going to go that far.

But it was a nice way to end a very nice day. And that was before my wonderful roommate's sweet brother fixed my laptop!

And now for some yoga and herbal tea.

Talk to you tomorrow! :)

p.s.  My new favorite drink at Starbucks is an Iced Passionfruit/White Tea with no sweetener. It was tart, but very refreshing. And 0 calories, 0 sugars!

:)

There is hope for me yet!

Year Four, Day 328: Success at Last!! This is What I Do

Hello My Long Lost Friends! Or, perhaps it was I who was lost? And now I think I am beginning to find myself!  Under layers of fat, and self loathing!  How's that for an opening line!  Or perhaps the title of a novel:  Layers of Fat and Self-Loathing! Today I stepped on the scale.  I am weighing myself every morning these days. I was shocked! I told my partner the scale must be broken!  Yesterday I weight 186. Today 185! I have been on a strict intermittent fast for the past 10 weeks. I have officially lost 12 pounds!  And the best news is I think I not only can stick to this way of eating, I am actually beginning to really enjoy it!  And look how far I've come! I've been writing since May 12, 2015.  Over 8 years now!  I know this blog post says Year Four, Day 328, but there have been many pauses in blogging. For instance, when I am not pleased with progress or simply have no words! I was 53 when I first began blogging. I am now 61. I honestly feel better than I did 8 years

Year Four, Day 335: "Crisis Fatigue"

Hello Friends! I have missed you! I have been so utterly exhausted and downright depressed, that I couldn't summon enough energy to even lift my fingers to this computer keyboard to write.  Apparently there is a mental disorder for people going through crises.  Crises such as pandemics, systemic racism, political division, unemployment, police brutality, civil unrest.... It's called "crisis fatigue". When humans are presented with a threat, adrenaline is released to give us quick energy. This is called the "fight or flight syndrome". But when threats are overwhelming, and perceivably continuous, like this year, it overwhelms the system. People can feel numb, depressed, anxious and irritable. Yup. That's me.  I guess I'm quite normal after all! I found an interesting article that describes crisis fatigue, especially in relation to current events.  But it doesn't really address how to take care of ourselves during these unsettling times!

Year Four, Day 247: What Happened in Vegas...

Expectations can be brutal. Especially when reality dashes them against the rocky shores of our souls. How's that for an opening line? I was so excited about my recent trip to Las Vegas.  I haven't travelled anywhere in so long. I do believe I have been bit by the travel bug.  I want the freedom to go places I have never been, see things I have never seen and experience life as a stellar adventure! My kids are young adults with families of their own.  I have my role as Zma, as Teacher Zita. But I am on a quest to find Zita. She's hidden someone deep inside. Covered in layers. Like an onion. I like the onion analogy. Notice the outermost layer of an onion - dry  and papery. As you peel off layers, the inside is juicy and sweet. I have paid my dues of sacrifice, shame and self deprivation.  What I want now is to embrace the life I have remaining. Have you seen the life pie chart? I don't know where I read this, but it stuck with me.  Draw a circle.  And then divide it i
