Day 84: High Noon

Yesterday, after my pleasant church interview, I took myself to lunch. This is an old tradition of mine, most likely carried on from childhood. Our family celebrated everything with a meal out.  And today felt like a good day to celebrate me!

I should have thought ahead and planned on a healthy meal somewhere. But my walk to church led me past an old-time looking diner. It was called The Cruiser's Diner. It was on SE Division and about 136th.  https://www.zomato.com/portland/cruisers-drive-in-portland

As I walked down, I felt a light sprinkle of Portland rain upon my head. I was ecstatic!  When I entered the restaurant, however I heard the cashier comment that the A/C was out.  I almost turned around and headed to the Dairy Queen across the street. But something felt pleasant about this little place. It was obviously family run. I like to frequent family run business instead of big chains. So I stayed. I ordered a mushroom burger with Swiss cheese, tater tots and a diet coke. And I made the brilliant decision to sit outside.

It was very comforting. And I was blessed with a few more light rain sprinkles.

My daughter called me as I finished my lunch. She asked where I was. I felt a pang of guilt as I told her I was eating a fattening lunch.  But I did not cover it up!  :)  She came and picked me up and we shopped for dinner. We were having the fam over for my niece's birthday. And we were very excited to see my grand niece who is just turning five months. A very beautiful, plump, bouncy baby girl! Her name is Aurora.  :)

Our family gathering was pleasant. We had chicken tacos and taco salad, beer and strawberry shortcake. I noticed I was absently munching on the chips and salsa. I managed to pry myself away. I stopped eating at 6:40 and just sipped on ice water. My niece and her family left early, but my parents stayed.

We watched an old black and white western: "High Noon" with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly.

I was pleased that we all enjoyed this movie. My mother told us she had seen it when it first came out in the theater. She paid $.25 for her ticket. Popcorn was a nickel.  I tried to imagine what it would feel like to be in the audience when this movie premiered. The smell of hot, buttered popcorn. The excitement of the big screen.  Not a lot of fancy special effects.  Not even technicolor! But the expression on their faces and the tone of voice - we could all understand.  And we all remarked that we stopped noticing that the movie was black and white early on.

Overall a very pleasant evening!

This morning I woke up early feeling a pleasant breeze. I don't teach until later this afternoon. And this week I have many students on vacation.  So I am going to be kind to myself and not scold myself about sleeping in. I did not actually stand upright until 10:00 a.m. But I feel good.

I had my green drink.  And I am preparing for a nice walk on the trail.  But before I go, here are today's stats:

Sooo...I gained a pound, but I lost an inch in my left calf and 1/2 inch in my right calf.

I suspect that I have been overindulging.  I know I did yesterday! But the beauty of my lifestyle is that I keep moving. I keep living. And today is a brand new day. A perfect day for eating more vegetables, fruits, lean protein. Always an ideal day for a lot of cool, refreshing ice water.  And an even better day for steering clear of bloaty tummy producing white carbs!

Happy Monday! :)

Year Four, Day 328: Success at Last!! This is What I Do

Hello My Long Lost Friends! Or, perhaps it was I who was lost? And now I think I am beginning to find myself!  Under layers of fat, and self loathing!  How's that for an opening line!  Or perhaps the title of a novel:  Layers of Fat and Self-Loathing! Today I stepped on the scale.  I am weighing myself every morning these days. I was shocked! I told my partner the scale must be broken!  Yesterday I weight 186. Today 185! I have been on a strict intermittent fast for the past 10 weeks. I have officially lost 12 pounds!  And the best news is I think I not only can stick to this way of eating, I am actually beginning to really enjoy it!  And look how far I've come! I've been writing since May 12, 2015.  Over 8 years now!  I know this blog post says Year Four, Day 328, but there have been many pauses in blogging. For instance, when I am not pleased with progress or simply have no words! I was 53 when I first began blogging. I am now 61. I honestly feel better than I did 8 years

Year Four, Day 335: "Crisis Fatigue"

Hello Friends! I have missed you! I have been so utterly exhausted and downright depressed, that I couldn't summon enough energy to even lift my fingers to this computer keyboard to write.  Apparently there is a mental disorder for people going through crises.  Crises such as pandemics, systemic racism, political division, unemployment, police brutality, civil unrest.... It's called "crisis fatigue". When humans are presented with a threat, adrenaline is released to give us quick energy. This is called the "fight or flight syndrome". But when threats are overwhelming, and perceivably continuous, like this year, it overwhelms the system. People can feel numb, depressed, anxious and irritable. Yup. That's me.  I guess I'm quite normal after all! I found an interesting article that describes crisis fatigue, especially in relation to current events.  But it doesn't really address how to take care of ourselves during these unsettling times!

Year Four, Day 247: What Happened in Vegas...

Expectations can be brutal. Especially when reality dashes them against the rocky shores of our souls. How's that for an opening line? I was so excited about my recent trip to Las Vegas.  I haven't travelled anywhere in so long. I do believe I have been bit by the travel bug.  I want the freedom to go places I have never been, see things I have never seen and experience life as a stellar adventure! My kids are young adults with families of their own.  I have my role as Zma, as Teacher Zita. But I am on a quest to find Zita. She's hidden someone deep inside. Covered in layers. Like an onion. I like the onion analogy. Notice the outermost layer of an onion - dry  and papery. As you peel off layers, the inside is juicy and sweet. I have paid my dues of sacrifice, shame and self deprivation.  What I want now is to embrace the life I have remaining. Have you seen the life pie chart? I don't know where I read this, but it stuck with me.  Draw a circle.  And then divide it i
