Day 162: I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar!

Our chamber music group performed last night. It was the best ever! Wonderful, receptive audience, good piano.  The church we performed in was older and the acoustics were very "echo-y" if that is a word!  But once we got used to it, the sound was lush and we just seemed to be immersed in the music.

An interesting thing happened last night. I was so tired before the concert.  I had actually been considering cutting back or not continuing after the New Year.  But once I got on stage and we started warming up, I was revived!

I was going to come straight home and forgo the after concert party. But they went to the "Over and Out" again - the church where we performed was just down the block.

I couldn't resist!

I'm glad I went. People really are not so bad after all. Especially people you make music with.  I just had one drink. It was called a "Cumin Centipede". Very tasty!  I was also quite hungry by the time the concert was over. I had my bunless cheeseburger on rice cakes, but I think performing works up an appetite.

So, lesson learned. Doing what I really love (playing music) with people who I truly like invigorates me! No matter how tired, stressed out or down I am.  It always does the trick. Need to remember this.  Because we have another performance next weekend!

Cheeseburger salad! There is a burger under those veggies.

I chose the shrimp ceviche.  It was served with a handful of tortilla chips. But I think it was the best choice on the menus besides the salads. I felt that I needed some kind of protein.

Had a nice visit with my musician friends.  But this morning, was very tired!

Amazingly, I popped up at 6:00 a.m. I think I am reprogramming myself!

So I got my butt up and off to 8:00 a.m. Mass.  I had a bit of a wait at the bus stop, so I headed to the coffee cart across the street. The barista is a nice lady about my age.  I wanted to try something new, since I was so tired.  A bit of a reward for making it through the week to a dynamite performance.

I had a brown sugar, cinnamon, white chocolate, mocha with soy.  It was delicious!  I made it through church and back home.  I made pork chops, scalloped potatoes and a chopped salad for lunch. Then I taught three piano students.

I am still conscious now at nearly 7:00 p.m.

I almost had a melt down after my last student though. I knew that none of the kids would be at home - two are working tonight, one is at a friend's house.  I was really wanting to go sit somewhere and have a beer and nachos! I don't know where that craving came from, perhaps a flashback from my youth spurred on by the performance and drink last night?

But I conquered!  I am woman, hear me roar!  I said "No! You don't need that!" It felt good to get strict with myself, but I got some odd looks from passers by. ;)

I reasoned that I am already feeling bloated and puffy eyed today. Imagine tomorrow!  Plus tomorrow is weight and measurements day.

So I was a very good girl. I came home and made a bowl of garbanzo beans and brussels sprouts topped with pickled beet and olives. I also made a cup of herbal peach tea.  It really tastes good and I am not worried about guilt tomorrow!

But now, I think I have an appointment with my Kindle and my pillow.

Happy Sunday and good night! :)

Year Four, Day 328: Success at Last!! This is What I Do

Hello My Long Lost Friends! Or, perhaps it was I who was lost? And now I think I am beginning to find myself!  Under layers of fat, and self loathing!  How's that for an opening line!  Or perhaps the title of a novel:  Layers of Fat and Self-Loathing! Today I stepped on the scale.  I am weighing myself every morning these days. I was shocked! I told my partner the scale must be broken!  Yesterday I weight 186. Today 185! I have been on a strict intermittent fast for the past 10 weeks. I have officially lost 12 pounds!  And the best news is I think I not only can stick to this way of eating, I am actually beginning to really enjoy it!  And look how far I've come! I've been writing since May 12, 2015.  Over 8 years now!  I know this blog post says Year Four, Day 328, but there have been many pauses in blogging. For instance, when I am not pleased with progress or simply have no words! I was 53 when I first began blogging. I am now 61. I honestly feel better than I did 8 years

Year Four, Day 335: "Crisis Fatigue"

Hello Friends! I have missed you! I have been so utterly exhausted and downright depressed, that I couldn't summon enough energy to even lift my fingers to this computer keyboard to write.  Apparently there is a mental disorder for people going through crises.  Crises such as pandemics, systemic racism, political division, unemployment, police brutality, civil unrest.... It's called "crisis fatigue". When humans are presented with a threat, adrenaline is released to give us quick energy. This is called the "fight or flight syndrome". But when threats are overwhelming, and perceivably continuous, like this year, it overwhelms the system. People can feel numb, depressed, anxious and irritable. Yup. That's me.  I guess I'm quite normal after all! I found an interesting article that describes crisis fatigue, especially in relation to current events.  But it doesn't really address how to take care of ourselves during these unsettling times!

Year Four, Day 247: What Happened in Vegas...

Expectations can be brutal. Especially when reality dashes them against the rocky shores of our souls. How's that for an opening line? I was so excited about my recent trip to Las Vegas.  I haven't travelled anywhere in so long. I do believe I have been bit by the travel bug.  I want the freedom to go places I have never been, see things I have never seen and experience life as a stellar adventure! My kids are young adults with families of their own.  I have my role as Zma, as Teacher Zita. But I am on a quest to find Zita. She's hidden someone deep inside. Covered in layers. Like an onion. I like the onion analogy. Notice the outermost layer of an onion - dry  and papery. As you peel off layers, the inside is juicy and sweet. I have paid my dues of sacrifice, shame and self deprivation.  What I want now is to embrace the life I have remaining. Have you seen the life pie chart? I don't know where I read this, but it stuck with me.  Draw a circle.  And then divide it i
